As the International Whaling Commission’s (IWC) annual meeting begins in Morocco, there has been a flurry of media coverage over a possible ‘deal’ or ‘compromise.’ Often the details, and sometimes the central points, can get lost as things are translated, edited, reworked and re-edited for the media, so we wanted to take the opportunity here to spell out just what Greenpeace’s position is.

Whale heroes face jail on World Oceans Day

World Oceans Day is a day for us to celebrate our seas and a time for us to honor ocean heroes across the planet. But, as the trial of two of our anti-whaling campaigners came to an end in Japan, the prosecution asked for Junichi and Toru to be jailed for 18 months. This is an outrageous politically motivated request considering they are absolutely innocent. If imposed this would be the longest jail term for any Greenpeace activist – ever.

Whale meat blockade

Greenpeace activists took action against commercial whaling and trade in whale meat by blocking a container ship with fin whale meat onboard bound for Japan from Iceland.
